MITIGATING MARITIME VBSS CHALLENGES

New technologies are addressing some of the unique challenges during visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) military operations. Boarding teams are now able to make use of magnetic climbing systems on boat hulls, shipping containers, and other ferromagnetic surfaces to enhance accessibility and speed. The REBS Magnetic Climbing System (MCS), recently featured in this article of Popular Mechanics, allows operators to quickly and safely board a ship from the surface without the need for a boarding ladder. In addition to its uses combating terrorism, piracy, and smuggling, the MCS also enables easier access to areas of watercraft for customs and inspection purposes. A related system, the Atlas Devices Pirate Paddles (APP), can be used for similar climbing operations and can even form an anchor for lifting and hauling tasks on otherwise smooth surfaces.
