In a simulated lunar EVA (extra vehicular activity) in the lava tube at Mojave National Preserve, Atlas Devices personnel test their load rated EXCON (EXploration CONOP) space suit simulators with the APA-5 powered ascender. Atlas Devices and the National Park Service worked together to facilitate the test activities in the lava tube, where the unique environment offered the chance to test rappelling, sample retrieval, and confined space mobility in a lava tube similar to what astronauts could one day explore or use for radiation protection on the moon. Atlas Devices is advancing the technology to perform power-assisted safe exploration of vertical and extreme terrain.
